

BackTrack was a Linux distribution, superseded by Kali Linux, that focused on security based on the Ubuntu Linux distribution aimed at digital forensics and penetration testing use.In March 2013, the Offensive Security team rebuilt BackTrack around the Debian distribution and released it under the name Kali Linux.The BackTrack distribution originated from the merger of two formerly competing distributions which focused on penetration testing.
BackTrack provided users with easy access to a comprehensive and large collection of security-related tools ranging from port scanners to Security Audit. Support for Live CD and Live USB functionality allowed users to boot BackTrack directly from portable media without requiring installation, though permanent installation to hard disk and network was also an option.
- WHAX: a Slax-based Linux distribution developed by Mati Aharoni, a security consultant. Earlier versions of WHAX were called Whoppix and were based on Knoppix.
- Auditor Security Collection: a Live CD based on Knoppix developed by Max Moser which included over 300 tools organized in a user-friendly hierarchy.

Hard Disk: A minimum of 8 GB disk space for the Backtrack 5 R3Linux install.
RAM: For 32 bit and 64 bit architectures, a minimum of 512MB RAM.
Installing Media: CD-DVD Drive / USB boot support.

Backtrack 5 R3 Linux Installation
- Configure your BIOS so it can run format from USB stick,every BIOS is diffrent so I can't help you with this one.
- Download BackTrack and Unetbootin
- Plug in your USB stick,make sure it is minimum 4GB capasity.
- After downloading BackTrack run UNebootin and select ISO image of BackTrack you just downloaded,it does not matter if in "Select Version" tab "r3" doesn't exist,just select any version you like.
- When UNebootin is finished restart your computer and when asked click any key on keyboard to start up the boot menu,choose "Default"
- Then you're gone be asked for username and password,default one's are:
Username:root
Password:toor
Password:toor
- Congratulations you made it to the BackTrack desktop,double click on the "Install BackTrack" icon and modify options as you wish.
- Next time you restart your computer you will be choosing operating systems.
